Don’t Ignore the Pain!
Many people brush off knee pain, thinking that it will either heal on its own, or that the pain is still
bearable, or that knee pain is normal in old age and cannot be helped.
While true in some cases, do bear in mind that:
You may be unaware of an underlying, more serious condition
Delayed treatment can often result in the condition worsening
Knee pain in old age may be common, but it doesn’t have to
be – symptomatic and curative treatments exist!
Dr Kevin Koo has over 20 years’ experience in the field of orthopaedic surgery, with special expertise of the knee. This includes knee replacements, sports and minimally invasive knee surgery.
Dr Koo completed his fellowship under the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) Award in London, United
Kingdom, and most recently received the Singapore Health Quality Service Award (Gold) in 2020. He
continues to be actively involved in teaching and research.
Dr Kevin Koo will properly diagnose the cause of your knee pain, which allows for targeted treatment to be
carried out.
What are Some Common Causes of Knee Pain?
Knee injuries are often sustained during sports activities, which include:
01 | Ligament Injuries
Caused by sudden stops or quick changes in direction, twisting,
or a direct impact to the knee.
02 | Meniscus Injuries
Caused by a sudden twist or trauma to the knee, and can occur together with ligament injuries.
03 | Bursitis
Knee bursae are fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction between moving joints. When inflamed or damaged
due to repetitive motions or a direct blow, bursitis occurs.
04 | Knee Dislocation
Caused by a sharp blow to the knee or a sudden change in
direction when the foot is already planted on the ground.
05 | Patellar Fracture
Caused by a direct fall onto the kneecap or direct trauma to
the kneecap.
06 | Tendonitis
An overuse injury resulting from suddenly subjecting oneself to
more intensive and repetitive exercises, causing the knee’s tendons to become inflamed.
Arthritis of the Knee
Arthritis also commonly causes pain and stiffness to the knee, with common types being osteoarthritis (characterised by cartilage degeneration) and rheumatoid arthritis (when healthy joint tissues are attacked by the immune
system).
